Home for the Holidays Week 3: Deck the Halls!

The holidays are a time to come together with friends and loved ones. Obviously, this year, that’s a little more complicated, as cases of COVID-19 surge across the country. As you are aware, California State, Alameda County, and Los Angeles County governments are issuing rules about small gatherings, including holiday gatherings, which we must comply with.

So from now through New Year’s, we’ll be sharing ideas about ways to enjoy this special time of year while keeping ourselves, our families, and communities safe and healthy. Each week, we’ll send out a new idea to make your life simpler—and your celebrations special.

Week 3: Deck the Halls!

Because half the fun of holidays is decorating

To build anticipation and create moments of connection this holiday season, challenge your extended family and friends to a door-decorating contest.

  1. Ready: Brainstorm as many festive themes as you have households participating. Brainstorm creative ideas for themes, whether that’s music genres, movies, or decades. For instance, a door might represent a totally ’80s Hannukah, or a Star Wars Christmas. You get the idea. Each idea goes into a jar (or a virtual one).
  2. Set: Have each household draw for spots and choose a theme. You can even host a group video chat to let the drama unfold live.
  3. Go! For the next two weeks, have each household decorate their door. Use social media, group texts, or email to encourage friendly banter and “behind the scenes” photos.

On the holiday of your choice, have everyone share a photo of their festive door and vote for a winner. Assign a prize, or at least claim bragging rights until next year.

We’ll be back next week with your next tip. Till then, have a healthy and happy week!
