A World-Class Service, Just Steps from Home

U.S. News and World Report names the Masonic Homes as a Top Short-Term Rehabilitation Center

Big news for Union City patients: The Masonic Homes of California has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s top short-term rehabilitation centers.

Established in 2016, the Masonic Homes of California’s Transitions short-term rehabilitation center is open in Union City to patients of all ages to recover following surgery, illness, or injury. The program’s highly qualified staff includes a dedicated registered nurse case manager assigned to each patient, plus an extensive interdisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, therapists, social services managers, and nutritionists. Specialized services are offered to patients recovering from orthopedic, neurological, and cardiopulmonary surgeries, as well as those who have experienced strokes.

With 19 therapeutic rooms, each with its own bathroom and on-demand amenities, Transitions provides patients with upscale accommodations during their recovery. Around-the-clock medical and rehabilitative care is partnered with expert pain management and assistance with personal care needs. One-on-one physical, occupational, and speech therapy is also available. All Transitions rooms are now outfitted with technology services through Amazon Alexa, so patients can look up information, request assistance, and more through voice demands.

“Whether it’s recovering from a hip replacement or heart surgery, we’re offering the highest standard of care to make sue sure patients recover as quickly as possible so they can go home to their family,” says Joseph Pritchard, chief operating officer of the Masonic Homes. “Transitions is special because of the people we hire. The team has a passion for service that allows them to be excellent even in the harshest of situations.”

The annual top short-term rehabilitation center ratings are now in their 13th year. Only 16 percent of U.S. skilled-nursing facilities earned the “top short-term rehabilitation center” designation this year. For 2022–23, U.S. News rated more than 15,000 organizations on care, safety, infection rates, staffing, and health inspections. For the first time, it also featured a new measure on weekend staffing and infections leading to hospitalization.

The Best top short-term rehabilitation centers methodology factors such data as resident care, safety, and outcomes. U.S. News evaluated each rehabilitation center performance using a variety of data obtained from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The short-term rehabilitation rating also includes measures of an organization’s success in preventing falls, preventing serious infections, and making sure residents are able to return to their homes.

At the Masonic Homes, patient comfort has been an important consideration from the very beginning, says president and CEO Gary Charland, pointing to the hotel-style amenities and made-to-order restaurant-style dining. “Feeling comfortable and at home reduces stress and encourages a swift recovery,” he says.

Through the award-winning Transitions short-term rehabilitation program, the entire East Bay community is able to experience the world-class care that has defined the Masonic Homes for the past 125 years.
